Computing Vision Statement

At St Peter’s, we aspire for every child to develop the knowledge, confidence and curiosity to understand, use and shape the digital world around them. Our computing curriculum enables pupils to become creative and increasingly independent users of technology, while developing the computational thinking and problem-solving needed to understand how digital systems work. We want pupils to recognise the possibilities technology creates, make informed choices about its use and participate safely, responsibly and confidently in an increasingly digital world.

Subject Intent

Our computing curriculum is designed to build secure and connected knowledge across the three strands of computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Using the Teach Computing curriculum, concepts and skills are carefully sequenced so that new learning builds on what pupils already know, with important knowledge revisited and developed in increasingly sophisticated contexts. Pupils learn not simply to use technology, but to understand the principles that underpin it: developing their knowledge of computing systems and networks, data and information, algorithms and programming, alongside learning to create purposeful digital content.

Through explicit teaching, modelling and carefully structured practical experiences, pupils learn to apply their knowledge to solve problems, create, design, program and evaluate. They develop computational thinking and learn to explain their reasoning, identify and correct errors and make purposeful choices about the technology they use. Online safety and responsible use are developed throughout the curriculum so that pupils become discerning digital citizens who understand both the opportunities and risks associated with technology.

By the time pupils leave St Peter’s, our ambition is that they have secure foundations in computing, can apply their knowledge with increasing independence and understand that technology is something they can question, understand and create with, rather than simply consume. This prepares them for the next stage of their education and gives them the confidence to engage positively with a digital world that will continue to evolve.
