Being confident and capable readers is ultimately the key that unlocks our children’s potential – we see phonics as securing solid foundations, empowering our learners to fully access our comprehensive curriculum. It ignites a curiosity, helping them develop as individuals and foster their love of learning to inspire, promoting inquisitive minds.
Phonics at St. Peter’s is taught using Read, Write Inc across Foundation Stage and Key Stage One, both internally and externally. According to the needs of the individual, children engage in differentiated groups as well as whole class teaching. Each session gives an opportunity for children to consolidate prior learning, before embarking on a new and exciting adventure: learning new sounds and phonemes, in addition to Read Write Inc.’s storybooks. We use Read Write Inc. We use a synthetic approach to plan lessons, teaching ‘pure sounds’ which are critical and the skills of segmenting and blending. It is our ultimate goal to develop their love of both reading and writing.
