    History Vision Statement

At St Peter's CE Primary School we want every child to leave primary school with a strong sense of identity, curiosity and connection to the wider world. Our vision is for pupils to see history as a living story they are part of—one that includes their local community, the story of Britain, and the diverse histories of the world.

    Subject Intent

Our history curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding and empower pupils to make sense of the world they live in. Through a rich blend of local, British and world history, pupils explore the lives, choices and experiences of people across time, opening both mirrors that reflect their own identities and windows into cultures, perspectives and stories different from their own.
We aim for every child to learn about the past and learn from the past, recognising how historical events, individuals and developments have shaped the present and continue to influence the future. By encountering diverse narratives and voices, pupils develop respect, empathy and a broader understanding of the human experience.
Our curriculum nurtures pupils as young historians, equipping them with the disciplinary skills needed to think critically, ask perceptive questions and construct informed interpretations. Pupils learn to work with a wide range of historical sources, evaluating evidence, identifying bias and piecing together the complexity of past lives. They develop chronological understanding, build secure historical knowledge and learn to communicate their ideas with clarity and confidence.
Through engaging enquiries, hands‑on experiences and meaningful connections to their own community, pupils develop a lifelong interest in history. We want them to leave primary school with a strong sense of identity, an appreciation of heritage and diversity, and the confidence to explore the past with curiosity, rigour and imagination.

‘The more you know about the past, the better you are prepared for the future.’
