    English Vision Statement

At St Peter’s, we believe that a strong command of the English language is fundamental to every child’s achievement and future success. Our vision is for all pupils to become articulate and confident communicators who listen with purpose, speak with confidence, read fluently across a wide range of texts, and write with clarity, accuracy and imagination.

Through an ambitious, carefully sequenced English curriculum, children experience the power of language to explore ideas, express viewpoints and emotions, and make sense of the world around them. We place reading at the heart of our curriculum, ensuring all pupils engage with rich, high‑quality texts that deepen understanding, broaden vocabulary and build cultural capital.

Our pupils develop as enthusiastic and critical readers, confident writers and effective speakers who use language creatively and purposefully. They leave St Peter’s well prepared for the next stage of their education, equipped with the language and confidence to participate fully in society.

    Subject Intent

We believe that a high‑quality English curriculum should inspire a love of reading and writing, while equipping all children with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to succeed across the curriculum and beyond.

Our English curriculum is ambitious, rigorous and carefully organised, closely aligned with the aims of the National Curriculum for English (2014). It is designed to ensure that all pupils, regardless of starting point, are supported and challenged to:

    • read easily, fluently and with strong comprehension
    • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
    • acquire a rich and ambitious vocabulary, alongside secure knowledge of grammar, spelling and language structures
    • engage with and appreciate a broad and rich literary heritage
    • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting language, style and form for a range of purposes, audiences and contexts
    • use discussion as a tool for learning, enabling them to articulate, explain and deepen their thinking
    • become confident speakers and attentive listeners who can present ideas formally and participate thoughtfully in discussion

These aims are embedded within English lessons and reinforced across the wider curriculum. Learning is carefully sequenced and progressive, allowing pupils to build a secure knowledge base over time so that they know more, remember more and can do more as they move through the school.

Through ongoing assessment and targeted support, we identify gaps and misconceptions early and respond effectively so that all pupils experience success in English. We believe that a secure and ambitious grounding in English is essential to a high‑quality education and provides children with the tools and cultural understanding they need for future learning and life beyond school.
