    Vision Statement

At St Peter’s CE Primary School, we believe that every child is a musician. Rooted in our vision that all are made in the image of God, we value and nurture each child’s musical potential, providing opportunities to sing, perform, compose, listen and create with confidence and purpose.

Through engaging with a rich and diverse range of musical styles, traditions and experiences, pupils develop an appreciation of music as a universal language that brings people together. Music enables children to express themselves creatively, celebrate their individuality and experience the joy of shared achievement.

Our music curriculum inspires curiosity, creativity and aspiration, ensuring that all pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate fully in musical life both within and beyond school. Through music, we seek to enrich children’s lives and support them in experiencing ‘life in all its fullness’ (John 10:10).

    Subject Intent

At St Peter’s CE Primary School, our music curriculum is designed to develop pupils’ cumulative musical knowledge and musicianship through a carefully sequenced and progressive programme of study. We intend for all pupils to become confident performers, composers and listeners, who can engage thoughtfully with music and appreciate its value within their own lives and the wider world.

Our curriculum is built around the progressive development of the key elements of music, including pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation. Learning is deliberately sequenced so that new knowledge builds upon prior learning, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections and develop increasing fluency and independence as musicians. Through regular opportunities to sing, play instruments, compose, improvise, listen and perform, pupils deepen both their practical musicianship and their understanding of how music works.

Pupils encounter a wide range of musical styles, genres, traditions and cultures throughout their time at St Peter’s. By exploring music from different historical periods and communities, they develop an appreciation of the diversity of musical expression and an understanding of music’s role in communicating stories, emotions, identities and ideas.

We believe that music should be accessible to all. Our curriculum is designed to ensure that every pupil develops secure musical knowledge and skills over time through carefully sequenced learning and meaningful opportunities to revisit and strengthen prior learning. We recognise that some pupils may require additional support, adaptation or scaffolding to access and succeed within the curriculum. Through inclusive teaching, high expectations and ambitious outcomes for all, including pupils with SEND, we ensure that every child can participate, achieve and flourish as a musician. We are committed to removing barriers to learning while nurturing confidence, creativity and a lifelong appreciation of music.
